School Summary

Cameron Elementary is located in Alexandria, Virginia nestled in a quiet neighborhood that seems a world away from the busy beltway that surrounds it.  The grounds include ball field and playgrounds regularly visited by neighborhood families and the local athletic leagues.

Our History: Cameron Elementary has served the local Cameron community since the founding of Fairfax County Public Schools.  The first Cameron School was a one room school house that opened shortly after the founding of FCPS in 1870.  In 1892 a new Cameron school opened near the intersection of Telegraph Road and Franconia Road, close to where the current location remains.  In 1952 the Cameron Elementary school we know and love today opened.  Fun fact: It was originally named Happy Valley Elementary, however School Board members decided to change the name in 1953.

Today: Cameron today educates a diverse student body, numbering approximately 500 students, pre-K through 6th grade. Cameron's teachers are a dedicated group of professionals focused on preparing students for the future.  The school community believes that all students can and must learn at the highest level.  Every teacher is committed to providing positive learning experiences that emphasize instructional rigor.  Teachers are trained in Responsive Classroom to provide safe, nurturing places for young minds to develop and grow.

Instruction: Cameron teachers are talented members of a professional learning community that aims for high academic results.  Through collaborative team planning, co-teaching in an inclusive environment and continued professional development, teachers work to meet the learning needs of each student.

Community: Cameron strongly believes in the parent-school partnership as a critical element to the success of students.  Parents and family members are encouraged to volunteer and visit the Cameron Parent Resource Center to connect with teachers and staff.  The Parent Resource Center is open daily and serves as a community and educational portal for parents to help find resources or simply to find out what is going on at Cameron.  The Cameron school community believes in the ongoing power of education and academic success of students.
